Baking Soda and Vinegar Extinguisher

What We Used:

Baking Soda (about 2 Tbsp.)
White Vinegar (about 1/2 cup)

A Candle
Lighter (matches would work)
Measuring Cup (any cup or container bigger than 8 oz. will work but a measuring cup has a spout which is helpful)

Now What?

Light the candle and set it aside
Pour the baking soda into the bottom of the container
Pour the vinegar into the container
Once it starts to bubble (immediately!), cover the top of the container tightly with your hands until it settles. What you have done is make carbon dioxide.
Next, "pour" your invisible gas into the candle and watch what happens!

If you are wondering how this happened, it is because what you had created in the container was carbon dioxide. Since carbon dioxide is a gas which is heavier that oxygen, when you poured it into the candle, the carbon dioxide pushed the oxygen out of the candle container. Since a flame needs oxygen to burn, the flame goes out!
